What are some types of dogs that could successfully protect my girlfriend from crazy gang members...?

while she's out jogging several miles through gang terratories and provoking gang members with obscene gestures late at night? 2 dogs to work as a team, which type would be good? Not German Shepherds. These are going to be protection dogs first, pets second.

Doberman Hands down. I live in a "Hood" full of gang memebers, and i also i get the EXACT same discusting harrasment she does. Until i started jogging with my Dobermans. I'm only 16, but my mom and dad had dobermans since before i was born and they have protected her when they would travel to places like chicago, and new york. When my mom was 26, in Chicago ( mind you she was a show girl, still in costume), a couple of black men were making cat calls to her, and when she didnt respond, they came running after her, until one grabbed her and her Dobermans then (mindy and gadgit) gave thm both stiches running the lengnth of their arms, to face.

Thats just an example. But let me tell you, there are not enough words for me to discribe how good a doberman is. Im always saying the same thing over and over agian to people, but a Doberman is the MOST AFFECTIONATE DOG EVER. I work in the circus, and i have volunteerd at animal shelters and no dog can add up to a dobe. I have lived with them allll my life. And my dad trains them, and he taught me.
Now i currently have one, bc my dad lives in spain when he came to visit, he took me to a shelter and we adopted the one i have now, Hammer.
But any-whoo. And another reason this owuld be the perfect dog for her, is becuase they are very athletic and were MADE TO BE ATHLETIC AND PROTECT. A doberman is not dangerous unless you abuse it, or treat it wrong for example, hitting him, ignoring, screaming at them abusivly, purposuly abusng him, and ect ect. As with any dog, they would become angry and not take it anymore, and snap back. But for NO reason EVER will a dobe attack its owner for no reason. And when you get a dobe, its all on how you raise it. Keeping it isolated from people and other animals will make it become afraid. let me tell you a bit about dobes.

They were "invented" for Guarding by a man who was a tax collector in Germany, named Louis Dobermann (short 1"N"). who need a dog to protect him in his runs accross town to collect taxes in the "scummy" neighborhoods. So He hand picked dogs like the Mastif ( size), rott (guarding Instinct and color), and Grey hound (speed) just to name a few. They do not have to be trained to guard their family and they are very Intelligent, Dobermans are the smartest breed of dog, you can look it up if you dont believe me. The AKC quotes them as " Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. Also, you wouldn't be sorry. They dont shed, they are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to train because of their intelligence, Extremly humorus!!!!! Their Bark is very intimidating, and their bite is worse ONLY when needed. when trained properly. Also they are VERY Affectionate, ask any Dobe owner and they will tell you, All Breeders and dog experts will also tell you that they get their nicknames, "velcro" dogs for being soo affectionate. They love to follow you everywhere, and please. They love children and animals as with any other dogs, when they are familiar with them or just no afraid, or if an abused dobe, or any other dog for that matter, you dont know for a fact or not, if they have problems.

Dobermans and other dogs only get bad reps becuase of the stupid Idiots behind them.

Also, get her to carry a cell phone with your number on Speed dial, and not to run with ear phones, bc she could get hurt by a car, or not hear anyone coming up behind her. Also, a can of mase, and when she comes up to a couple of gang members, or when she feels unsafe, to call you, and you can stay on the phone with her until she feels better, and also, Call her every 15minutes. A quick "hello, is everything okay? ok i love you bye!" will be another great thing to do so you both wont have to worry.

I'm still saying the dog isn't the answer here. But if you have your heart set on getting a dog to protect put in your preferences at the breed selection quiz on www.dogbreedinfo.com.

There are many very, very protective dogs that will have no problem protecting the owner, but these kinds of dogs are not for people that don't know how to handle them. When you have that kind of animal it's like carrying around a loaded gun and not knowing how to put the safety on if you don't know how to handle the dog it will kill someone you had no intention of the dog hurting. Because what the dog considers a threat, and what is a threat is not always the same thing.

If for some reason she can't handle a tazer and pepper spray, there is no way she will handle a dominant aggressive dog. It could just as likely bite her or a family member if you don't know what you are doing.

Get the girlfriend a treadmill or pass to a good gym, it will cost less then the dogs in the long run and keep her much safer.

Maybe you should buy a new house where she doesnt have to run through Gang Bangers and bad areas.

If thats not possible I would consider getting her a dog she can handle. German Shepards and other large breeds take a lot of training to teach that not only you but SHE is the person in control, and when she goes running its not going to be any fun if the animal is under control. Especially when the gangs come up and bully her because Dogs will be protective and could end up hurting someone.

Does she carry a cell phone??

You dont want to get a dog from the pound unless you are sure of their temperment and background. Also buying a puppy takes a long time to train how to behave on runs.

Also you want a dog that isnt going to scare guests to death when they come near her.

All in all- its proabably better to just move out of the area but I get it if thats not possible


One last piece of advice- Gangs Carry Guns and a dog isnt going to protect or scare them that much. As soon as the dog is shot, they can do whatever they want to her.

You said no German Shepard's but German Shepard's have been used by the police force for many decades. Any large breed dog is good however, most gang members now carry guns so it wouldn't matter what breed dog you got for her as they would shoot it if they felt threatened.

I would contact my local law enforcement center and discuss the situation with them. They can have a patrol unit keep an eye on the area (providing they have enough officers on the force) or they can suggest an excellent training center for your dog.

The large breed dogs that would make someone think twice about messing with you would be:

German Shepard's
Rottweilers
Doberman Pincher's

Well normally I'd recommend German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois (similar appearance to GSD but trimmer and faster; they don't hit has hard but they'll hit faster; overall wonderful protection dogs). If you don't like that type, try a dobe or rottie. If you are really serious about protection. find a Schutzhund club in your state and ask for references for people who sell already trained protection dogs (no sense getting a puppy when what you need is a dog) for reasonable prices (some idiots charge $10000+ for a Sch 1 dog). You can find a Schutzhund club by going to the link provided. Just contact them and ask for all breed Schutzhund clubs in your area.

Do you really think that dogs are a good defense against guns, and knives? And then when one of those gang members gets bit and sue's you and wins! how will you feel then? I would really be pissed if i had to pay some freak for something that was there fault. I truely think your girlfriend should find another option. even in the small fairly safe town I live in where there are no gangs I don't walk the same way every night.

I would have to agree with the person who said to get a treadmill or a gym membership. Also, there must be other places to jog. Why is she jogging late at night through these areas anyway? Doesn't really sound like a good place to live anyway. Maybe you should consider moving.

A Giant Schnauzer and a Standard Poodle, no one will get in 20 feet of her, including you.

I say these breeds because they are great guard dogs.But then most of the dogs people have suggest to you are. This two breeds will still be able to do the job after a 5 mile run.

A pair of Doberman Pinschers and they love to run!!! Perfect jogging partners. They are very intimidating and protective. They can't stop a bullet so I'd have your girlfriend carry a gun too if the area is that bad!!!!

my husband had an akita as a kid that took down 6 german shepherds one day when they were threatening the family. Akita's a loyal dogs and can be very fierce. Also, they are a big dog.
