Always wondered this ... no-one "really" seems to know ... when you are taking antibiotics - i.e. penicillin ... WHY do people always say "ohh make sure you dont drink alchohol ..." is it because it makes you drunker .. or does it stop the antibiotics working .. or something else ...

hmmm .. ive always wondered ...

There are some forms of antibiotic that don't combine at all well with alcohol. Drinking whilst taking them can render the person unconscious however if that is the case the Doctor and the pharmacist will probably tell you that. Rather than trusting in urban myths though, before you take any medication, read the information provided with it, then you will know what is safe and what isn't.

It is because it stops them from having the effect they should to kill the infection so really it would be a waste of time even taking them, if someone is taking them then it is up to them to decide if a drink is more important than getting rid of what you have got.

The simple reason is, it heightens the chance that you may vomit and thus resulting in a missed dose which is vital in the course of any antibiotic treatment

It cancels out the effects of the antibiotic .

Because the alcohol kills the antibiotic and stops them working, so even if you carry on taking them with alcohol, they won't work.

You have just answered your own question. Alcohol does actually prevent antibiotics from working.

at a guess the alcohol interacts with the chemicals in the drugs, so preventing them from being effective.

I don't think Answers would attract the sort of knowledgeable people for you to get a definitive answer.

You can drink alcohol with some, but you should always check with your doctor - and don't just take the no answer (though sensible) unless they assure you it will cause harm.

the antibiotics stop working some cases it can ake you feel worst.
