The simple answer, which I realise you do not believe, is that he didn't.

Mankind invented the idea of God. It is in the nature of man to try and understand the world around him. Our ancestors had no better explanation for many of the natural phenomena around them. From the evidence that they had - that they had to create many of the things they had, it was natural to presume the things that were already there had to have been created by a greater being.

God, in a sense, was a scientific hypothesis that fitted the observed facts. The problem was that primitive societies required social structure and God, and religion, became part of that social structure.

Once the idea became codified, once the revealed word of God, in the various religious, became set in stone - the natural process of questioning and testing the hypothesis of God against the observable evidence ceased.

As a consequence of this unfortunate history a great many people in the world are now stuck with this idea even though human knowledge has come on leaps and bounds.

God created us to glorify Him. Let's pretend for just a moment that you were the creator. Would you not want your creation to show you admiration, love and respect?
When we glorify God with our lives we ultimately fill the second purpose for his creating us. Our lives become a testimony to others when they see something 'different' about us. A joy of knowing God...a concern for others..etc This sets us apart from much of the world today and people are drawn to a person who shows joy and peace through even the most difficult of circumstances. Thus we become God's advocate in helping others to search Him out.

He created us in our interest. By realizing, admitting and declaring that He is the Sole Creator and Death-giver, and The Sole Judge to account for our deeds not mere love of Him, He has glorified Himself and let us also glorify Him.

i think the answer is different for everyone, i believe we all have a different important purpose.

for me, i think it has something to do with being a mother - i haven't figured out all the details yet, maybe i never will, but i think if i do that one thing to the best of my abilities, whatever the purpose as far as god is concerned will take care of itself.

as for those who say we evolved from lesser life forms, i personally don't dispute that, it makes as much sense as any other theory, but the fact is each person that ever existed was born as a person, and for some of us it is interesting to think about why.

So that we can become the tree of truth and of life, strong in ourselves and deeply rooted with lots of branches, offering people, advice, wisdom and speaking truths. The knowledge of purity, kindness and love, that we can touch and share with all around us.

According to a literalist interpretation of the bible-
to FAIL and grovel to him for our failures, and if we don't fail, to grovel to him because our existance means we are failures.

This is why I don't see any reason to worship the deity who pretends "God" is a name. He's a crappy god, sorry.
