How important to a computers running effectiveness is cleaning the registry. How often should it be done and what program is best to accomplish this?

TweakNow Professional 2007 and TuneUp Utilities 2007 both have good registry cleaners in them. They will give you options like things they detect as SAFE TO DELETE, UNKNOWN and POSSIBLY SAFE TO DELETE... so after you do the safe ones, you might want to learn a little about the registry or at least the program entries the other two pick up on.

The registry hold configuration information for EVERYTHING on your computer from hardware to software-related. A cluttered registry is the primary cause for system problems and performance issues aside from malware (However, malware is third-party whereas the registry is used in every Win-based system).

Cleaning the registry helps to eliminate errors and even crashes - though, in most cases, associated software handles it's registry entries well enough that performance isn't a huge issue. Though, cleaning and compacting the registry does help.

uninstalled and unused installed programs contribute to making the registry cluttered, so if u have installed many programs over time that you no longer use, then you may want to clean the registry, but it really doesn't make that big of a difference, it only affects a few things and not all that much
