My husband cooked a gumbo for my dad a few weeks ago and left the iron pot at my dad's. His house keeper washed the pot and did not oil it after she cleaned it. I did not know this until today when i got it out of the cabinet and it was covered in rust. How can i restore it? It was already seasoned so well

This is the Old Fashion way: Put the pan in a roaring fire and let it burn off! Then reseason.

I love cast iron, the best way I know is old fashioned Brillo and lots of scrubbing, you can use a grease cutting detergent because you're going to have to re-season it anyway when all the rust is removed... Good Luck!!!!!!!

If the housekeeper washed it with soap, you will need to reseason it anyways so just rewash it and dry thouroughly. You could just use a wire brush and then oil it if you feel like taking the chance that soap was not used.

Just wash in warm water with a bit of soap and use one of those green scotch bright pads. Rinse well and dry then simply re-season. No biggy.

Use steel wool and brush off as much rust as you can - then season it again.

You can use a SOS pad or Brillo(works better) to clean it. After a few rinses, it should be fine.
