Sometimes MY heels are over my head!

2007-03-12 09:56:41 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 2 0

Often wondered that, too. That's why I use the expression "*** over applecart" :)

Really, it's a misuse of a Middle English idiom, which makes more sense: "heels over head", implying a[n emotional] trip or flip.

And another poster was correct--it is more than likely misspoken enough because "head over heels" rolls off the tongue more easily that eventually it came into common use enough to be cited in the good ol' OED.

Maybe "doggy-dog world" will be next....

It has just become a common figure of speech, like 'could care less' when you really couldn't care less. It was probably something else at one time but it has gotten mixed up because 'head over heels' just kind of rolls off your tongue.
