Hi there,
i have to go tomorrow and have a cavity filled and i'm wondering if it is safe to have novacaine in order for them to drill.

novacaine is never a good idea. it creates cavitations when teeth are pulled and even when you are just getting a filling, it is not good on the central nervous system due to the epinephrine. a safer option is scandonest 3%, non-vaso-constrictor

Actually in the US you can't get "novocaine" anymore. Novocaine was an ester drug and many people had allergic reactions to it. US dentists only use Amide drugs now like Lidocaine.
Tell the dentist that you are 27 weeks pregnant. Or if you are concerned right now call any 24 hour pharmacy and ask to speak to the pharmacist. Pharmacists know MORE about drugs than ANYONE ELSE even a dentist. So ask this question to them and get their recommendation about what local anesthetic can be used on you.

I'm a dentist.

At 27 weeks, you're early in your third trimester. This is a safe time to have routine dental work performed.

Obviously, the doctor should be very conservative with the amount of lidocaine with epinephrine he/she uses.

Hello, I'm assuming you are 27 weeks pregnant? In our practice we dont like to do anything the 1st and last trimesters. 2nd trimester is normally ok to have routine work completed. Good luck!

no problem at all. and really it's ok throughout the pregnancy but we prefer not to see pregnant mothers while baby's organs are forming during the 1st trimester OR when there's a possibility of me ending up at the foot end of the chair if you know what i mean!

the worst thing of the appointment will be a little numbness in your legs from laying down.

good luck!

I'm not sure. Just make sure you tell your dentist you're pregnant as soon as you get there (or call and ask them if it's okay). Or call your ob/gyn and ask her.
