If there were no more immigration at all, the economy would contract. If there were no more illegal immigration, we could look forward to full employment. 12 million illegals could be replaced by the 12 million who are either actively looking for work or who want to work but have given up looking and have, perhaps, gone back to school. I did that myself for a while. Yes, employers would have to pay a bit more in wages, but that day is coming anyway. The middle classes have just about had enough with illegals and 21st century Robber Barons.

My guess is that we do not need immigrants as much as the government would like us to believe. (UK)
Labour has a vested interest in immigrating people from Africa and Asia with the hopwethat they will vote labour. Never mind the effect on England.
Also I have noticed in my work that a lot of immigramts arrive being supposedly highly skilled (I.T. specialists for example) and cannot find work in their profession. They end up working as security guards. Where is the sense in that?

More to the point what would be the effect on the economy if immigration could be rolled back to the levels of 40 years ago.
The damage has already been done.

Other than that I don't think it is measurable other than the untold billions that have been spent on housing immigrants to the detriment of the indigenous population. The high unemployment levels of recent years would also have been far less, all adding to the burden placed on our population.

I did not become racist until we were put in our place by the government legislating against our protests when we objected.

We've got enough people with basic needs to keep the world going round and round......so I don't think it would mean much of anything.

Necessity is the mother of invention so maybe if we didn't value cheap labor so much.....someone would discover ways to advance us to where there was no need for cheap labor.

Our economy, in my opinion, is based more on consumption and disposable items as well as advancements, than it is on immigration. Cheap labor keeps people from developing a better way.
An educated society keeps us advancing. The rest we all need.

Where's our brain children? Develope a universal translator. A replicator. Something to where we can get to more than sheer survival.

The middle class would grow, as it did when immigration was limited to about 150,000 to 300,000 people in the '20s. That is when the American Dream was born.

The employers wouldn't make as much profit, but the employees would have a better lifestyle.

NO immigration is ridiculous, however. We can fill whatever skilled requirements we want to fill, because we GIVE so much to our immigrants. There is certainly no need to tolerate illegal immigration, at all.

To GM87, we need to subsidize agriculture as a security resource so we do not become dependant on foreign food. However, if agriculture raised its wages 40%, out of the poverty level, it would only cost American families of 4 about $10 more for produce a year, according to studies. I bet we'd save that just from the fewer social services being tapped to support agriculture's current imported work force.

probably better off without Muslim immigrants. Don't know about the others.

According to the government they are the faith group mostly likely to be unemployed and most likely to suffer from ill health. Hence, they are most likely to be claiming benefits.

As for the other immigrant groups, I just think their numbers simply need to be controlled and monitored, that's all. You can't blame them for looking for a better life but you can blame the government.

If we turn a blind eye to this, the racists will exploit this situation for political means.

IT WOULD EXPLODE! It would be great! BTW, this has nothing to do with race so don't even go there.

I'm assuming that you are referring to the ILLEGAL alien crisis. Legal immigrants are good for the economy because they add to it.

However. the ILLEGAL aliens are destroying our economy. Without them our schools and our health care system would be better. Citizens would not have to worry about identify theft as much. Wage would increase. Tax payers wouldn't have to pay for all the services that are extracted from them. Crime and drug problems would decrease.

May 1, 2006 proved that we don't need them. The "day without an immigrant" protest was suppose to cripple our country and show how much we need them. Well they were really wrong!. Everything went wonderfully. Teachers could properly teach the kids. Businesses functioned perfectly. Freeways were clear! Their protest just proved how our economy would be without them - GREAT!
No ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIMINALS! It would be wonderful!

Things would get better and better . First , we wouldn't have to build more and bigger schools , hospitals , roads , housing developments , landfills , bigger sewage plants . It would help our environment , clean water and air and what about the over crowding , as in India and China .
I see a win win situation .
Hey , look up " Immigration gumballs " ,
it will open your eyes to the immigration problem we are and will be having .
This doesn't include the illegals

Taxes would go down, there wouldn't be as many "free clinics", minimum wage would go up, the housing market would make it affordable for the Americans to buy a home and the crime rate would drastically come down.
