There is a MetroCard reader machine in every subway station. One is directly under the window where the clerk sells the cards. And there is always one on the level with the clerk - before you pay to go in. After you insert your card to go through the turnstile or on a bus, your balance shows - but, it also deducts the fare so don't do this to simply read your balance - it will cost you $2.00. There is no reader on the buses, but after your fare is deducted, it will show your balance.

Not via phone or Internet.

You can only find out your balance (without paying your fare) by going to the token booth where they have a certain reader, that you can scan your card through, which gives you your balance. They also have similar standalone readers (silver) near the token booth as well.

Other than that, if you go through a subway turnstile/metal doors or drop your card in the fare box on a bus, you can see your balance that way, after your fare has been paid.

As far as I know, you cannot check the balance by phone or net, but you can take the card to any subway station, they all have machines near the ticket booth that tell you the balance on the card.

You have to visit a Subway Station and use the MetroCard reader.
