what is a good way to "mark" each puppy as it is born. We were going to use different colored string but then we read that it sometimes gets licked off or comes undone. any different ideas?

I just recently whelped a litter of bichons, I have 7, 4 boys and 3 girls. Yes, as they get older you can tell them apart, sort of, I guess it depends on the breed. I purchased velcro collars from petedge.com. They come in a package of 8, and they have been a real blessing. They only cost $4.00. I purchased other items from them, such as pee pads, and formula. Shipping is a little high, that is why I bought other items to get my money's worth. Pee pads were $20.00 for a box of 100, at pet smart they are $30.00.

When the pups were first born the collars were too large, so I did use different colors of yarn for the first 2 weeks. I happened to have yarn on hand, that matched the colors of the collars, so when I was able to use the collars, there wasn't any confusion. The yarn stayed on. I made sure it was secured tightly, and as they grew, and the string got snug, I snipped them off and used the velcro collars. Being that my dogs are all white, there aren't too many differences in them besides their weights. They are now 4 weeks old, and they are getting to be such fun to watch. This is the first litter I have actually whelped myself. I grew up around breeding hunting stock, (beagles and brittany spaniels) so telling them apart was easier, just had to remember their markings, so there wasn't much need for colored collars. These will also come in handy when I go to sell them. I am going to place my ad tomorrow, so that when they are old enough, anyone that has looked at them prior, it will be easier to spot their favorite.

Good luck with your pups, I know I will have a hard time parting with them.

I was wondering why you want to mark each puppy when they are born. I really don't see any reasoning in doing that. I would be curious why you are doing this. If you don't mind.

I know some breeders will mark their puppies with finger nail polish when someone picks them out to be sold. I know my puppies so I never had to mark them but then again I only had six to worry about.

What I am saying here there is no need to mark your puppies right when they are being born..wait until they are older and if you must then use finger nail polish.

Different colored nail polish on the toes. I did use string but only on one puppy because she was the only one who looked like another puppy (good thing about breeding chihuahua LOL). And it didn't stay on the whole time I had her, just until I could tell the difference.

I have always used different colored yarns. But I never put them on until they were at least 3 to 4 weeks old.
Any sooner and mom would take them off.

You can put a cat collar on them. They get used to it pretty quick. Another thing is just use a non-toxic paint and mark a color on a white part of their fur.

I get the paper type collars that the vet uses...you can write on them to identify each pup....i.e. 1F2 is first female born, 2 pup in litter...works really well and you can cut them to size.

You can buy very, very tiny light-weight collars of different colors to keep on the puppies as they get a bit older. But there's not reason to mark any of them at birth - as a breeder you'll be surprised how easy they are to tell apart.
