I'm LDS, and no one pressures us to get married young, although it is common.18 is not the typical age, though. We believe that getting married in the temple is one of our highest priorities on earth. We date so we can find worthy companions to marry in the temple, because we beleive in eternal families. Men usually get married after going on a mission, which is done at age 19 and lasts for 2 years. Women get married after they go on a mission as well, if they choose to go, but are also counseled that marriage is a higher priority for women if it is a choice between the two callings. I hope to get married to a good return missionary after heading out to college, but it will definitely be after I am 18!

Families are central to the Mormon faith. The family is the most important thing, and therefore things such as careers, school, and work shouldn't get in the way of having a family.

Most Mormons don't get married when 18. That's very young...even for Utah and Mormons.

I'd say that many Mormon guys get married between 23 and 28 and girls between 20 and 26 or so.

The pressure is definitely there. I grew up Mormon, but left the religion as soon as I left my mom's house. I am 28 and people think I am an old hag for not being married and not having at least three kids. Thankfully, I have few mormon friends and they are "old" and single as well so I don't have pressure from them!

It gets annoying!

Mormons do typically get married a little earlier but not usually at 18. If you are a man you will most likley go on a mission and will not get back until you are 21 and you cannot be married to go on a mission. But I'd said getting married at 18 is generally discouraged, most people think it's too early. I'd say most people get married at about 21.

im mormon, im 21, im not being married in the temple, nor will i be married before i am at least 25. the girls are pressured to be married though. if the women arent married before they turn 21 they are asked to serve a mission as are the men when they turn 18. the men are asked to serve a mission when they are 18 and when they return at 21 they are asked to get married. they are supposed to find a nice cute mormon girl and take her through the temple. (gag)

Yes. The Mormons I know get married early and often date solely for the purpose of finding a girl to marry.

There is no direct pressure to marry. If you are trying to abstain from pre-marital sex, it makes sense to marry at a younger age. Since LDS singles have an "old-fashioned" attitude toward marriage, they will be more serious about it than other groups.

I used to live in Utah, and yes it is true that they marry young. I don't know if I'd call it pressure--it's just the cultural norm. My dh and I were in college there and lived in married student housing; it wasn't unusual to have students with up to 5 kids in the student housing (and boy was it noisy!).
