I was eating a piece of candy when I felt something in the back of my throat. The best way to describe it would be like there's a popcorn kernel stuck in the back of your throat, it kind of hurts, but it's mostly just annoying. I looked in the mirror, and almost above, but to the left of that dangling thing in my throat, there was a white bump that almost looked like a whitehead pimple. What is it? Is it contagious?

I also always have to clear my throat, which has commonly been mistaken as allergies, though allergy medication hasn't helped. I've had this for a couple of years. Could this be associated with the bump in my throat? Should I have my tonsils removed?

I agree that it is probably tonsilitis. You may also be finding it hard to swallow and feeling a bit run down?

It isn't contagious (unless you are playing serious tonsil tennis with someone - and even then its unlikely) but you will need a course of anitbiotics to get it sorted. Make an appointment to see your GP.

While waiting to see your GP, try gargling with salt water (1/2 teaspoon to a cup of warm water) or soluble aspirin.

If the 'kernel' is in the back of your mouth then it also needs to be checked out as it could be something sinister.

Get well soon!

Do you often have a blocked nose too? If so you may have problems with your adenoids (in your nasal passages). This can cause excess mucous production which might explain the throat clearing. :-)
