Infant baptism in the Catholic Church is the ultimate demonstration of the providence of God, and of salvation with no works at all.
The Church freely supplies all that is necessary, including the faith, and the infant needs to do absolutely nothing in order to have the stain of original sin removed, become a temple of the Holy Spirit, an adopted child of God, co-heir with Jesus Christ, and a member of the Catholic Church.
Baptism is always 100% efffective, simply because God desires all to receive salvation, through Christ and his Church.
Anyone who delays baptism until later in life runs the very real risk of death without salvation in Christ ... which is a very foolish thing indeed ... as typically, one who dies without benefit of baptism is not fit to enter heaven.
Why did you wait so long to do this?

From what I remember what was taught in Sunday School, Baptism is washing away original sin. I know many other Christian faiths question the validity of baptizing someone that is not able to make a conscious choice. I am just stating what the Catholic Church believes.
The Sacrament of Confirmation, done at a later stage in life, is supposed to reaffirm Baptism and at this point the person can make a conscious choice.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is by baptismal regeneration and is maintained through the Catholic sacraments unless a willful act of sin is committed that breaks the state of sanctifying grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace which is received through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a change of the heart wrought in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and the fruit of that new life in Christ (John 15).

Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation, the three sacraments one receives to fully become a member of the Catholic Church.
Like other Christian denominations, baptism celebrates God's undying love for us and Jesus' sacrifice which destroyed eternal death. Through baptism, a person is freed from original sin and brought into the family of God.

WOW. You mean to tell me your child will be baptised in TWO WEEKS and your parish has not given you instruction onthe Sacrament?
You really ought to find another parish that cares about educating its people!
The Sacrament of Baptism removes original sin fromt he soul of the baptised and brings the person into the family of God.
Call your pastor and tell him you, your husband and the godparents want to sit down BEFORE the baptism and learn exactly what responsibilities you be undertaking.
During the baptsim, you will be making vows before God- you had better understand them before you get there!

It means that he will be considered a member of the Catholic faith and if he ever decides to change faiths, he can be excommunicated from the Catholic Church as a heretic. Infant baptism is not scriptural. Baptism is supposed to be for believers and a 7 month old isn't old enough to decide if he wants to be a believer or not.

Catholic baptism means that the child becomes a child of God and a member of God's Church. It is analygous, on the spiritual plane, to natural birth, whereby a child becomes a member of a family. Baptism is spiritual rebirth, just as the Bible describes it - being reborn spiritually through water and the Spirit, buy the initial infusion of sanctifying grace.

When a child is baptized the church members welcome a new member into their congregation. The parents and Godparents are, in effect, saying "we want this child to be a Catholic, we want this child to be a member of the church". The parents promise to raise the child according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Godparents promise to help the parents raise the child according to the teachings of the church.
