The Overhead Door company claims on their web site that they were the inventor of the overhead garage door. They say "Overhead Door Corporation pioneered the upward-acting door industry, inventing the first upward-acting door in 1921 and the first electric door opener in 1926.."

C.G. Johnson, invented the upward-lifting garage door in 1921. Followed by the electric door opener in 1926.
