I always tip but some servers really don't deserve one.....unfriendly, unprofessional( like kneeling or sitting when taking my order) and like the case in many SteaknShakes ....unbathed.
But I always tip because payment for service is part of any full service restraint .....leaving nothing is never acceptable ...........but if you don't tip , it's not wise to ever have the same server.....because pissing off people who are handling your food is never wise

Tipping used to be a lot more simple.
Tips means To Insure Prompt Service and when it first started out, was done at the beginning of the meal. That inspired the wait staff to give better service and extra attention.
Many people don't understand that in some states, restaurant and wait staff dont recieve even minimum wage and may only earn $3 an hour or so and depend on tips to make up the difference.
Also some people only go out for special occasions and simply cant afford to leave tips.
Further problems started when many jobs added tips that didnt used to and the percentage went up from a reasonable 5-10 up to 15-20.
My sister told me that airport baggage handlers (skycaps) now expect at least $5 for a bag at the Houston airport.

A lot of people are like that, they figure that paying for the meal is enough. My hubby has this thing he does when we go out to eat that drives me nuts...we kinda figure out what the bill is gonna be,he'll estimate the tip at 20%. Then every time the waiter/waitress goes by without refilling a drink or doing anything else that bugged him,a dollar gets taken off the tip. We've already left a restaurant without leaving a tip at all if the service really sucked.

Although I do tip - I don't really believe it is right. I honestly believe that many people work hard (and lots work harder then the those in the service industry) and they don't get tips. Look at people working in McDonalds etc. They make crap for wages, put up with a lot in customer service and don't make a dime on top of their minimum wage salary. I can see tipping servers, hairdressers etc. if that was their sole living, but it isn't. How many of us have worked are butts off at the most thankless jobs?
Something else to ponder - did you ever also consider that the reason they are going out is for a special occassion? Maybe they saved up for such a meal and didn't have a lot extra. I don't know - just an idea.
Extreme poor service would also probably contribute to lack of tip.

I always leave a tip. I even leave tip when the service is exceptionally bad, because may be the server needs a little uplifting, so he/she will be more polite or caring toward the next customer. For all I know, when I get an exceptional service, it may be for the nice tip left by the customer before me. I agree with you on the fact that some people don't leave enough tip or any tip at all. And that is very rude and inconsiderate. There are many things about eating out we don't teach to other. For example, restaurants have two sets of doors with the intention that when one set is open, the others should remain closed so the cold or warm air (depending on the season) don't get in the restaurant. I see people open both sets and let the breeze in all the time. I think we should start explaining these manners to others and show it by example. We are so isolated in a restaurant, that we don't stop others from doing something wrong right in front of us.

People don't seem to tip because society is becoming unaware of small appropriate gestures that say thank you for your service. Gratuity should be given if good service has been provided in most cases about 15% (at least that's how much I give) the world is becoming jaded and more rude unfortunately so the only suggestion I can make is to work at a restaurant were gratuity is already added onto the check

Tipping shouldn't be automatic. The minimum wage should be applied to servers the same as everyone else and tips should be an extra, as implied by the name.
You'll find in North America that many tourists won't tip because it's not customary or perhaps even offensive in many countries outside of this continent.

Having been in the restaraunt biz for 30 years i have to say I totally agree with you. The main reasons I 've seen for not tipping are :
perceived poor service
bad food , especially if the server does nothing to help the situation
ignorance(yes, there really are people that dumb)
just plain cheap
But I bet you knew all this already, lol

I usually always tip when I go out, however I do have a couple of exceptions:
1) Buffet - usually only leave a dollar or two, because, well, I serve myself;
2) Poor service from waiter or waitress - I don't penalize them if it's the kitchens fault, but when I get poor service from my server, I don't think I owe them anything.

So, if a customer is not demanding, then they deserve not to tip? Tipping is a sensitive issue with me, Not wether or not to tip, but if I am out with a group, I usually tip the waitress directly, or little. I tend to tip 20 percent, but found that in a group, that usually goes towards paying for someone elses meal, or used as an excuse for others not to tip. I have even caught other people trading my tip for a smaller amount. So, if I cannot tip directly, I tend to tip very little.
