I want to make a cake for my daughters birthday, a monkey cake. I need to be able to cut the cake up to position everything before i frost and decorate. I work, so im not making it from scratch, I just need to know which brand cake mix i should buy?

Betty Crocker, Pillsbury or Duncan Hines mixes will do. Pick the flavor and formula that appeals to you.

I've tried all three brands and various formulas w/ success.

A friend of mine who makes beautiful cakes like these, recommends a one with pudding in the mix. Bake the cake at 25 degrees less than the package says to get a flat top. Once the pieces are cut and assembled make a syrup out of icing sugar and water and brush all over the cake to seal in crumbs. Then ice.

i personally love duncan hines cake mixes when i can't make my own. betty crockers are pretty good too. i dont like the taste of the pillsbury. and i have never tried a store brand.
but try the duncan hines devils food chocolate!
