I have two cats ive had them both for about 2 years now and i got them about the same time. I love them and they keep me great company but now im having a baby and the babys father wants to get rid of one of them due to the amount of hair and upkeep two are. I plan on giving one of them (the girl) to a nice family but im wondering if the boy cat will miss her? am i being silly or will there be a significant change with my cat? Also since im concerned about minimizing the amount of hair around the newborn, any suggestions on the best way to keep it to a minimum?

Yes there will probably be a change. Whether it will be for the better or negative I can't say but with cats whenever there is a major change in their lives it shows in their actions. For example our old cat died recently despite the vet's and our best efforts. He was an old cat and the great great grandfather of the youngest cat here and not physically related to the other cat but here and with her all her life. She mourned, tried to comfort us and has been very muchy right with us and demanding much more attention and affection. The younger cat 3 yrs old used to go rambling in our woods and now is gone only for a couple of hours at a time and then comes back to check on us and has started to take over places that the old cat (very much top cat) had staked out as his. He is starting to try to immitate things he saw the other cat do but never tried before. So not all changes are negative. I am not sure that one cat really takes less attention than 2. As far as cat hair two things will help get a petting mitt sometimes called a shedding mit at the pet store. This removes hair gently and painlessly and collects it as you pet the cat. And keep the kitty or kittes out of the baby's room which is a good idea anyway to prevent scratches and any other problems.

You can tell if they bond more to each other or to you. If the latter and you must give one away please see if someone can take them both.

I hope this man is making a real committment to you and the baby. None of my biz but I get concerned at the term the baby's father and have seen so many guys who do not make that committment so tho it is totally not part of this question please make sure he signs birth certificate at birth and does the other things appropriate for the baby's good.

cats that are kept together for that long can go through quite bad depression. with long haired cats the best way to keep the hair off the newborn is to have an area where the cats can't go into. you could also have the cats hair trimmed and probably keep both of them.

Yes, i do believe that it will probably effect the other cat's moods and behavior and all that. A lot of it depends on how attached the cats are to each other. Just be careful and watch the remaining cat closely for like a week for signs of stress.....IE: not eating or drinking. if you notice either one of those, take him to the vet immediately, as too much stress can cause all kinds of bad things for cats.

I had my cat Luna for about a year when I got another, older female. Luna completely changed! She used to be a lap cat, always sleeping on my bed, following me around-but when I got Snarf, she became reserved, hissy, mean, and hated to be picked up anymore. When I gave Snarf to an older couple, Luna went back to normal after a few weeks. I know its the opposite of what is happening with your cats, since Luna hated Snarf, but yes, I think seperation causes mood changes. Theyre probably very attached to each other. : /

i have 3 children and we have 3cats 1outdoors and 2indoors.we have a small house and i have never had problems with my cats and the kids,as long as you keep your house clean and brush up what ever hair gets on the couch or chairs,,,it will devastate both your cats and maybe your husband will get rid of the other cat later,,,maybe you should try to find a home for both of them....you can get a lint brush and it will clean your mans hair and the cats hair which is none at all,,,i would never give up my animals especially a man...there might be jealous on his part...lol

It depends upon what the cats are doing when you separate them.
