Hope. Pandora brought the jar with the evils and opened it. It was the gods` gift to man, on the outside a beautiful, enticing gift, called the "lucky jar." Then all the evils, those lively, winged beings, flew out of it. Since that time, they roam around and do harm to men by day and night. One single evil had not yet slipped out of the jar. As Zeus had wished, Pandora slammed the top down and it remained inside. So now man has the lucky jar in his house forever and thinks the world of the treasure. It is at his service; he reaches for it when he fancies it. For he does not know that that jar which Pandora brought was the jar of evils, and he takes the remaining evil for the greatest worldly good--it is hope, for Zeus did not want man to throw his life away, no matter how much the other evils might torment him, but rather to go on letting himself be tormented anew. To that end, he gives man hope. In truth, it is the most evil of evils because it prolongs man`s torment. - F. Nietzsche

Nietzsche speaks in several works of the revaluation of values that the Judeo-Christian tradition gave rise to. Things that had been considered good by ancient pagan people (like bodily health-including appetites, pride and a wish for power) are now (under the Christian ethos) considered bad and their reverses good. He is then very keen that we re-examine all that we consider good. What if hope really IS bad but we'd just never taken the time to consider the notion?

Hope is not a torment. It is the thing with love and faith that can be used to overcome ALL evil. (1 Corinthians 13)

i disagree .. i think .. Jesus said "My kingdom is not from this world." ,, if we were to act not by mandates but by the conviction that our life has a concrete purpose, which is to finish our own creation by respecting each other, by becoming aware of the great dignity and responsibility of man, and by understanding that finishing our own creation is to become rich, very rich, but not from material riches, but from spiritual riches based on love toward our Creator and to everything that surrounds us, then by conviction and not by mandate we would have societies free from corruption and violence, which would be the best inheritance for our children.

For many it is a toss up between hope and the lack of hope being the greatest evil.

I say lack of hope is the greatest evil.

If you believe in fairy tails, you will end up as a bad dream in the end. Come back to reality - you are just dust-bound flesh and bones unless your soul is saved for eternity by your creator.
