Get a better connection. You are on dial up I presume?

If you have a good connection, your computer may have a virus that slows and prevents your connection from running smoothly. If you can take your computer to a clinic they can empty your hard drive for you and clean it up. Or you can try doing it yourself. You will have to reinstall your softwares though.

Get rid of the overheads, reinstall windows, or else add more RAM. Assuming your connection is all right.

Also , is this arecent phenomenon? It could be cause of spywares etc. Stop all unnecessary processes, also Go To Run in start menu, and type MSCONFIG and remove all unnecesary programs from starting on startup.

Opening too many windows at the same time can slow down as well!

First, to be safe, I suggest you run your antivirus in Safe Mode. To get there:

To start Windows in safe mode
1. Click Options, and then click Print to print this topic for reference. Windows Help is not available while you start your computer or run your programs on the MS-DOS operating system.
2. Click Start, and then click Shut down.
3. Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.
For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.
4. Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
Notes
· In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices.
· You can change settings as needed by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and double-clicking Network or System.
· After you finish this procedure, you need to restart your computer before Windows will start properly.

Then, examine your start menu. Graphics cause RAM overload -- games, wallpaper, screensavers, slide-show screensavers. Lose the wallpaper and screensavers.

Again, in Safe Mode, I would run a Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and a defrag.

That ought to help.

Are you on modem or highspeed internet?
Have you done a spyware/virus check?
How old is your computer? If its really old this can be a problem.
If its none of those and the problem is recent, it could be your internet provider.

If you computer only recently started acting like this, you could try doing a system restore to a date when it did work ok. To find that, just click the help & support button in your start menu and type system restore in the search bar. Then click the start system restore wizard.

Click on my computer>control panel> internet options> privacy> then delete cookies and temporary internet files.

If this work bring up a search, then find a folder called "prefetch" and delete all this contents. Because Prefetch contains the system's cache, the next time you turn the computer on, it will take a LONG time while the cache is repopulated.

I this doesn't work run a virus scan than try defragmenting it. please note that defragmentation takes a LONG time as well.

If its with every browser that its taking that long, then I would try to find an anti-virus program, and make sure something isnt trying to replicate or download on your connection.

However, you can also try to clear the temporary internet files from the cache(s) and see if that helps any.

You need more RAM in your machine. A normal computer with enough RAM should not take 10 minutes to load a browser.

Go to http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10639427.html?tag=lst-0-2 and download SuperAntiSpyware. It's the only program out of like 15 that I tried which deleted a certain adware program that was crippling my computer. Also, check your add-ons for unnecessary objects.
