The breeds I can think of that can take a pit bull wouldn't be good jogging partners, they are working livestock guard dogs and not interested in running for miles. Plus even then the pit would do damage to the other dog in a fight.
My best advice would be to get a tazer and can of pepper spray for her. Good for nasty pitbulls or nasty people that might bother her.
Most of the dogs that would enjoy a good run would be good protection from humans that might threaten her, but would most likely be hurt in a fight with a pit bull. I wouldn't get a dog to try to solve this problem, it would just make it worse.

Having a dog will make the situation worse because Pits are prey driven. I would suggest contacting animal control and in the meantime your girlfriend might want to jog in a different area until the situation is under control.

Fila. They do not need to be trained they are natural protectors, but they are not the type that barks they are the type that kills. However, they are this way with people that are not introduced to the dog regularly when they are puppies. If you like having company over you will have to keep them in another room, and they will not like it because they want to be with their family. You also, Will need a 6 ft. fence, although some have been known to jump a 6 ft fence to protect their owners. Look them up on the net. If, I lived in the proper environment I would buy this dog. Go to www.fila/dog.com/about _the_fila.htm. I do like the gym membership idea better though.

Well in my opinion, getting another dog wouldn't solve anything. You would be causing danger to that dog too. And the pitbull would kill your dog, and then attack your girlfriend. It is almost animal cruelty to bring a dog for a jog just to be attacked by a dog and killed :(

I wouldn't get another dog, I'd get a gym membership. Having another dog would most likely just make the pits want to come pick a fight with your dog.

If protection is needed, then get it from animal control. Do not bring a dog along just to get it attacked.

How about pepper spray or a spray bottle full of soapy water or even those alarms that hurt a dog's ears or a stun gun if one does attack. Instead of a dog-dog fights can be horrible.

um...i don't think a dog is the solution here. i mean i assume this dog will be your pet, and if it were to get in a fight protecting your girlfriend, will she just stand there watching it possibly get killed? why don't you get her some pepper spray instead. it will frighten off dogs just as effectively.

K, heres some.
An akita would do fine. THEY never bark unless there is something to bark about.
Rotties are excellent too
Sheperds are cool, but pits can dominate them muscularly.
Hope this helps.
if your REALLY, i mean REALLY concerned, then get a mastiff.
