Kittens kneed their mama cats belly to stimulate milk production.

Grown-up cats still do this to sweaters, blankets etc just out of habit and they seem to like doing it. Don't leave any good sweaters out.

What your cat is doing is basically the same thing it did to it's mother when it was nursing. It is very common in cats, and there is nothing wrong with the cat, and there is really no way to stop the cat. The cat is purring like crazy because it is extremely happy at that moment, it is getting some sort of affection in it's movements.

It goes back to when they were nursing as a kitten. Kittens kneed to help express more milk. They never grow out of it, and it's kind of like a security blanket for them. Also, you know that your cat is really content when it cuddles up and kneeds you (no pun intended).

The act of kneading in kittens is to stimulate milk from the cat who is nursing.

In adult cats, this act is more associated with a form of exercise called isometrics.

it's the whole when they are babies that they do it to their mom to get food, and it sticks with them. it is definitely a good sign that they are truly content if they do it around you, or on you or anything like that.
