what are your directionals doing when they act up? do they blink fast, meaning you have a bulb out, or intermittently out. do they not work at all? do you have a tilt wheel, and use it? if so, try tilting your wheel up or down to see if it works or not. if it changes with that, you may have a broken connector at the multifunction switch (directions/wipers switch) the wires may be pulling out of the connector and causing an open circuit. if it is this, it is any easy fix, with a new connector, available, but maybe not in stock, at your local ford dealer. if you do it yourself, make sure the connector is the same, there are a couple different ones, and that the wires go in the correct spots.
i hope this helps, and if it doesn't, could you please elaborate on what exactly happens when they act up

If the light lights up.. my guess is a possible bad bulb (as resistance changes the light will either flash fast or be steady...)
Usually if it doesn't flash at all, I'm usually looking for an issue with the turn signal switch...
the turn signal switch can fool you and act like a bulb also but usually playing with the switch and it starts working, I look at the switch and it's wiring in the back of the switch

First make sure the bulbs are good. If they are you are going to have to pull the steering wheel to check the switch. Most all switches are plastic and over time will fail, break get dirty. If you are lucky the only problem is the switch is gummed up. One thing to bear in mind if you never messed with an air bag don't!! replacing the parts or the bag itself can be very expensive.

Do you have an intermittent tail light or front parking light. If the bulbs are burnt out, that will have an affect on your turn signals.

I think that you need to replace some bulbs and possibly clean the connectors for them. The factory uses some lubricant on the bulbs when they install them, and it'll cause them to short as it get older, and begins to dry out.

You can't spell, but I think you are correct. Check your wiring in the steering column.
