There are different correct ways to prounouce that last name. It depends on the family, actually. I hear the pronunciation as Kotch for Mayor Ed Koch, I've known a Catholic man with the last name who pronounces his with the ch rather like the Scotish ending of loch ..that gutteral ch. and then there is the pronunciation of Koch as that of one of the most poweful Koch families, the Koch family of the "Koch Industries" who pronounces it "coke". The Koch family (not Jewish), is most notable for their control of Koch Industries, the second largest privately owned company in the United States. Charles and David Koch are Roman Catholic. As some others have noted, the surname Koch is not a "Jewish" name, but a German name. Surnames were not used by Jews in Europe until there were laws demanding they do so. Many "Jewish" names were names already in use in the lands they lived in that described their occupation. Some last names were chosen based on their tribal affiliation or family ancestry and there are only a very few really distinctly Jewish names. Koch isn't one of them. While there may be Jews with this last name, there are far more Lutherans who have this last name than Jews. In fact two of the very worst Nazi criminals of World War 2 had the surname Koch. The "***** of Buchenwald" Ilse Koch, married to Karl-Otto Koch, the Commandant of Buchenwald, were both born to Lutheran families. Ilse was born Margarete Ilse Köhler in 1906 in Dresden, Germany, into a working-class, Lutheran family. So, to answer your question...the surname isn't a "Jewish" name, though some Jews may have it and the pronunciation could range from Kosh, to Kok, to Coke, to Kotch depending on the family. You will just have to ask the individual or look up their particular family tradition and pronunciation.

Many Jewish words have more than one way to pronounce them (Sephardic and Ashkenazic pronunciations). You'll often find s's and t's switched and the accent on different syllables (like Shabbat and Shabbos). The best way to "get it right" is to ask the people that you relate to.

Of the examples you gave, pronounce them just as they are spelled, with the accent on the last syllable.
