I'd like to write something cute to him, a few lines, a poem, whatever. I wanna show him that I still care (ok, and love!). Can you please help me?
We haven't been apart for that long and I hope we perhaps could get back together...

Just send him a text message that simply says "happy birthday" or send him a card. He'll still feel the love and know that you care with something simple. Then you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing.

Send him a simple card, nothing too sappy, or send him a short text. Remember, the reasons you broke up are more than likely still valid and there is always the possibility that this desire to have him back is just the loneliness talking, and that will go away over time.
If you really want to get back together with him the card or text will open the door, it's a friendly gesture on your part and if he wants to respond, he will, if he doesn't then it's over and you need to work on accepting that.
If you do end up getting back together remember, you're still going to have all the same issues, the relationship won't be magically fixed just because you want to try again, you are both still exactly the same people you were when you broke up.

I read an online book called how to win your love back. It really worked. The basic principles are that you always be a friend to your former loved one and that you "DO" keep in touch with them. Do not hold any expectations on this person and do not reflect any past history between you. You can if he brings it up though. You go on with your life and you will be appealing to him if you have something going on besides him. This will make you more intriguing and less clingy. Just remember to be friends and then include this in your note. No love stuff. Keep it simple like you care but no more than that.

If you want him back then you must be careful not too sound too pushy in your birthday greeting to him. Just by wishing him a great day is a way of showing him you still care.

make a card. on the card put cute love stuff and hearts. also, if u really do still love him, WRITE IT! ask if u can get back together. (oh yeah, and dont forget to put happy birthday) LOL

awww...hon. These are hard. My most recent ex and I broke up like a month before our one year anniversary. It was really hard. Just write him a little note that says how you feel, but, don't be too intimate because you may freak him out.

Find some song lyrics for a song that you know he would not have heard (possibly from another genre of music than he likes) that tells how you feel. There are songs out there for everything!

write him something that will remind him of good times, when the two of you were happy together. if he doesn't appreciate at least you can have a nice trip down memory lane. best wishes.
