One way for temporary relief may be to place the area of you body that has the cyst on a flat surface. Have someone else take a very heavy book or other object and smack hard and solidly on top of the cyst. I'm not sure if this is doctor recommended but it does give temporary relief.
Otherwise, you could see a doctor and have a surgeon remove it.

painful may mean pressure on a nerve, the cyst are not usually anything which will cause problems. i have had 3. one ruptured, one was drained by my family doc, and one was removed by a general surgeon. pain is not good--see a good doc. none of the three has given me any further problem.

I have one on my wrist-right on top of a tendon! When it gets to hurting, I take two fingers and tap lightly on it. This helps the pressure and if I did it like I was supposed to-often-this would help it disolve.

Best way: Hand surgeon. Not plastic, not orthopedic BUT a Hand surgeon.
Cheapest way: Place a book on top of it and hit the top of the book with a hammer. But, it will come back.
