Because that was what they did at birth to get milk from there mother (kneeding on her belly... to keep the milk ducts flowing)! It is a comfort thing... So if kitty kneeds on you or on a soft blanket its a feel good situation!

I heard on a documentary about cats that they are showing affection and it is also what they do before they lay down for a nap. My older cat, Maxi, kneeds my husband's stomach for like ten minutes and then lays down in his lap for hours! I would say that kneeding is a cat showing love for it's owner.

It is a left over from when they were a kitten. If a kitten is taken from its mother too early, it never gets weened properly. The kneeding is how they stimulate the mother to produce milk.

it is as stated the process a kitten does to stimulate the mothers milk when it is nursing. It does not come on because a kitten is taken away from his mother to soon. I am a former Manx breeder and have 2 who continue to do this. Their mothers are still here and kittens were never separated from them. The process is much like purring. They are content and comfortable and happy doing this. It should cause no harm. One of mine stands on my lap and does this to my chest. She is very good about keeping nails retracted so really no harm. This should no be discouraged as can effect the cat and it's relationship to you and people in general.

It means they are happy, and content... trying to "set up" a comfortable bed for themselves.... they think that kneeding it makes it to their liking and makes it softer.

Every cat that I have had over many years has done this. I have heard it called boxing, making biscuits, etc. I think it is a way for them to feel bonded with their human.
