I've been prescribed some by my doctor, who told me to take two because I'm a big guy. I've never taken them before. How powerful are they?

Tylenol 3 is a much more powerful drug than over the counter pain relievers because it contains codeine, which is a narcotic. It is not the strongest pain medication available but if you are not used to taking strong pain meds, it may seem very powerful for you. I took it for many years and eventually it didn't seem to work so well for me and I had to change to something else. It really all depends on your tolerance. If you are unsure about taking 2 to start, take one and see if it helps. If it doesn't, you already have the doctor's ok to take another. Be aware that even if it does not seem to touch your pain, it WILL affect your ability to do certain things like driving and using dangerous equipment. Don't do anything that may endanger you or others until you know exactly how you react to it. Also, be careful not to take more than prescribed by your doctor.

Best wishes and I hope your reason for needing pain meds goes away quickly.

The others have a good suggestion about taking one and seeing how it goes, however, this could be a problem if you are in a lot of pain. If this is the case it would be best for you to take both at once, especially if that's what your doctor told you to do.
When you take one at a time and wait to see how they're doing it doesn't affect you in the same way. And ideally you should take them at the first sign of pain, though you might be well past that point already.

Depends on the your drug sensitivity. All pain medication can react differently with different people. Personally #3's knock my on my butt and I'm not a little person! But I am very sensitive to pain medication. My best suggestion is if your going to be driving or operating machinery I would not take them. If you are worried about the effects while you are at work only take one and when you get home take 2 to see how you do on them. However, if your are staying home then take the 2 as prescribed and see how they effect you. I hope this makes sense and helps.
