I'm hiring a lady to pick up my son from kindergarten in the afternoons, give him lunch, and watch him until hubby and I are finished work and can pick him up (around 5 hrs total). Daycares in my area run around $445 - $460 for this kind of care. How much should I pay?

You will have to pay the going rate in your neighborhood. Have her complete a criminal record check and have her pick your son from school for a few days (while you are home or go with her so she is familiar with route). If she is providing lunch and snacks and is active with your child then will pay more for quality care. You may save money with her if you offer to provide a bag lunch for your son.
I paid $22.50 a day for this type of daycare and I provided my son's lunch. I live in Canada and this was a year ago. She did not charge for gas because her son was at the kindergarten as well.
Good luck.

It depends on where you live. Is the $445 per month? If so, that only breaks down to around $20 a day. Or, 4.45 an hour. Not such a high price to pay to know that your child is safe. I am assuming that your school offers no aftercare because he is am kindergarten? My last part time job was $15.00 an hour. So, it depends on where you are. If you are getting someone that doesnt really need the money maybe $ 20 a day would be enough. Remember, you get what you pay for. So, be very careful. I know how hard it is to find good daycare.

Well you need to take into consideration that she is using her own vehicle to run around in and her own gas so...I would ask her what she would be happy with and go from there. This also depends on if she is licensed or not. If she is licensed I would say at least $400 if not then maybe $300.

In what third world country does Seeker live in where you can get a baby sitter for 2.50 an hour? I can't hire an illegal alien for that.

I think, taking care of your child is a huge responsibility and so you should pay her a regular pay. $12 an hour would be very fitting. That's what I would pay.

I pay 2.50 an hour to babysit plus more if they drive and more if they cook. If the lady cleans a little to even more. I bet you could get a Mrs. Doubtfire for the same price as daycare.

I'd estimate about $150 a week.
