I just got another dog hes only about 4-5 months maybe... I bring him home and feed him and went to pet him while he was eating.. the little guy sounded like he wanted to rip my arm off!! worst part is I know the person I got him from and he does not abuse dogs at all but I am wondering how the heck do you make a dog like that? I have only had him one full day now and already he has learned to be ok now and I have my hand right in the bowl while he eats just like my 2 dogs.. he also growled when I tried to make him go laydown once again he is now obedient and listens well but I want to know how can someone overlook something like that?? how do people let their dogs act that way? I just cant fathom it... training them otherwise is simple and takes almost no time at all... this little pup made me sad to see him like that, but now he respects me as leader and has no aggression at all. Why cant people see how to be a leader to their dogs??

I can relate to your puppy issue I recently adopted a deaf white boxer and although now she is almost a year old, she was quite trying in the beginning. We have since adopted a second boxer who was about 8 months old when we got him and was a lot more difficult to deal with. He is a smart allic and thinks everything is funny. This is due to the prior owner giving him wat he wanted all the time. So we are having to break bad habits and form new ones. I strongly believe that if people are consistant with their animals they will gain more respect.

He may hve come from a house with more than one dog. Sometimes dogs will be aggressive around the food dish because they've always had to fight for their food.
There's a possibility he wasn't fed enough or fed often enough at the other owners house and he's very protective of his food because of that.
He may have been teased with food which might make him a little snappy at feeding time.

I think you're doing the right thing to get him used to the fact that food will always be there (establishing trust) and he doesn't need to be aggressive over it.

It's the genes. You did the right thing by recognizing the problem and training for the solution. Congratulations. A lot of people would have given the dog up for adoption (or worse).

some dogs have a natural tendency towards food agression. some people don't have the knowledge on how to deal with it and a lot of people will not offer the help to somone who has a dog with it and doesn't know what to do.

It happens because ignorance is bliss...It's the same reason my neighbor's 9 month old lab pulls on his leash, on a spike collar, up on 2 feet with his mouth wide open and they ask why my dogs don't do that...

He's not too young to be re-programmed, start working on him immediately.

maybe your dog was not properly trained or handled. contact the person you got the dog from and tell them what happened. If you find out that the dog's previous owner wasn't treating your dog properly, you should tell them and call the ASPCA.

It's the same way with kids people just don't want the hassle of it all and just say oh well and don't have enough energy to mess with discipline.
