Ask him what the most embarassing thing is that ever happened to him. Kind of generic but always fun to hear the answer. Another one would be to ask where he sees himself 5 years from now. That gives you some insight into what his long term goals are for the future, and if his plans include you. ;)
I also like what the person after my post said about basketball - ask him about his favorite sport. If it's something you don't know much about, ask him to teach you or tell you more about it, or watch the next game with him. Guys dig girls who are into sports.

Ask him who he thinks is the best basketball player of all time, then follow up with, how about top ten of all time. If he fails to mention any of the following names, ask him "don't you think ______ should be up there?"
