I mean, he's just so melodramatic! He's such a curly black mustache, tie the girl to the train tracks, cackle gleefully, evil plotting villain! Such a caricature.

And hey, what better way to bring people into the "love" of God than to say "well, if you DON'T come to God, there's a big awful meanie waiting to claim your allegiance, and he'll get it whether you consent or not... and you should really be scared, because he's one nasty fellow, he is... he'll hurt you real bad, REAL bad... so come to God!"

Now God looks so much better! Of COURSE you'll wanna "go with God" after hearing about that Satan guy. After all, if you're not with God, you're against God ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You're_either_with_us,_or_against_us )... and you don't want to be AGAINST God... do you?

Some what.

I just think it's sad how many people live in constant fear of Satan. And how much of the world's ills have been blamed on something imaginary when in reality it's our own fault.

And how many people have been terrified into a religion because of the concept of Satan.

Ok, i am answering you again Zero...

I like your question

Its amazing how the worlds view of Satan has been distorted in to some Comic strip character with the mandatory Red jump suit, pitchfork, and littl horns on his head,,, oh, and dont forget the slick black mustache.

Unfortunaltle he is much different to that indeed,

The Bible says he was the highest of the heavenly beings, one of Gods Best angelic creations, he was also the head Worship leader, so very musically gifted, until prie took him down.

He is hyper intelligent, although that is questionable, as who would be dumb enough to think thay were as good as God!

Anyway, utimatly he HATES GOD, but he cant hurt God, So he works to Steel, kill and destroy us, spiritually disconecting us from our maker, and tempting us to do all sorts of wrong thins such as kill, hate, hurt, including ourselves.

I picture him more so as a smooth crafty silver tongued Lawyer, twisted on lies and craving the demise of all mankind

C.S Lewis Said..

"Indeed he safest road to Hell is the gradual one- the gentle slop, soft underfoot, without milestones, without signposts"

Thanks for your question.

Your description is humorous. You know, my sister always imagined Satan to be a very handsome man (imagine Julio Iglesias at appx 40 yrs young), in a black tuxedo and red rose boutonniere, but instead of feet, he had hooves.

~SHUDDER!!!~

Satan doesn't exist, and that is 1,000% real. All of what God creates is good, there's no such thing as a Lord of Darkness.

You do make a good point though, the Church has always used Satan as a threat into being good. It's much easier to be good from fear of Satan, and harder to be good for God, period.

In my religion, we do not believe in Satan. We believe in worshipping God for His sake, and we believe in cultivating such a desire, such a deep love, that even if worshipping Him would send us to the depths of hell, we would worship Him anyway out of love that strong.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Funny?... Yes I do, but only after I came to "know" him.

One night I fell asleep and stayed awake to challenge this demon in my mind... I am still here, he is not.

You see I was conditioned by the world like many to believe he was "out there" now the memory is just an old part of me that I use at will to identify this conditioning/programing in others.

It is just the opposite. I fear the Lord and what He can do. Satan can do nothing unless God allows it. My life is in the hands of God - not man - not Satan. Neither Satan nor man can take my life without God's approval. Satan was triumphed over by Jesus Christ, Almighty God. Satan is a defeated foe. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Seek you first the kingdom of God. You are right about one thing and that is "you don't want to be against God." God is able to give life and God is able to take life.

No! I've been so well-indoctrinated in catholicism that I'm still terrified, even though I'm now an Atheist and don't even believe anymore.

I still can't watch the Exorcist. Hell, I can't even THINK about it, or doing laundry is out of the question for several days (I have to go to the basement to wash).

I'd love to laugh, but my catholic scars just don't have any elasticity.

I like the Hamburgler look. It is quite funny. They invent this Satan dude, create a Hell and then try to place him in the middle of every bad event in history.

My favorite part is how Satan and God, like -- argue, in the Old Testament.

Maybe Yahweh isn't the only deity created in our own image.
