In the past year Thai authorities have tightened up visa requirements considerably. Rules continue to change, and you're best to either contact a Thai consulate or embassy or else consult with a specialist visa website like:
ThaiVisa

Generally speaking, two main visas are available for travellers. The first is actually a "visa free" stay of 30 days, the second is a tourist visa valid for two months. Both can be extended, for varying lengths, varying number of times and varying costs. We suggest you consult your nearest Thai embassy or consulate or Thaivisa.com for further information as details will vary on what your nationality is.

The Thailand tourist or business visa is usually valid for three months from date issued, for a stay up to 60 days for tourist or 90 days for business or visitor. The period of stay for both Tourist and Business visas may be extended upon application in Thailand
For double entry visa - available for tourist visitors only - consular fee is double (request for more than one entry should be made in writing with the application form). Business visitors requiring more than one entry should apply for the multiple entries visa.
No visa required for U.S. tourists staying less than 30 days.
U.S. Citizens who were born in Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia are advised to obtain a visa even if stay is less than 30 days, and submit the following additional requirements:
1. Personal history, including how the applicant came to the United States, and reason for travel to Thailand

2. Copy of Round-trip airline tickets required

3. Letter of reference from employer

4. Copy of recent bank statement confirming sufficient funds for support in Thailand
Granting of a visa does not guarantee the applicant entry into Thailand.
