My cat had kittens yesterday and after we got her back from the vet, she started leaving the kittens and looking around the house. I know that kittens can not regulate their body tempuratures and need to feed atleast every 4 hours. But it momma gets up to walk around or is restless, how long before we have to put her back in the nursery?

she actually comes up to my fiance and cries at him, and then goes toward the bathroom and looks at him like, "are you coming?"

I know its kinda normal for her to walk away from the kittens for a while to break, look for food, relx, but how long until we put her back?

She goes back everytime they cry

and she saw the vet with the kittens first thing this morning. I think that triggered the restlessness.

i dont not suggest locking her in with the kittens.. since she has a reason for leaving them in the first place, it wouldnt be a good idea to imprison her there.
it could be that she gets too warm when she's with them. are they in a place that gets too much furnace heat?

kittens cuddle together when the mother isnt there. and as long as she goes back to them when they call out, its okay if the mother doesnt stay with them all the time.

She may be just looking for a place to hide the kittens. Just put a warm blanket over the kittens but not too large a blanket. Maybe an infant size blanket and close the mama cat inside with them but don't be all up in her business after that. Cats need some privacy right after they give birth. Good luck!

Have a heating pad with the kittens- but make sure it's under something so they don't get burned and check it often and as for the mom, you need to bring her in, I believe every 2 hrs so that the kittens can be taken care of - maybe take some food in there for the mom so she feels catered to, cause those kittens aren't in the clear yet.

i'd put her back after about an hour maybe less depending on how warm the kittens are at the time. she probably left them because the vet touched her kittens and she's not impressed so she's finding a spot to hide them where they cannot be touched again.

Kittens need to feed about every three hours, but they need snuggle time too. Mama cats get restless, and she should be able to wander. As long as she can get back to her babies on her own, she will know when it's time to go back to them. Also, they will cry and she will go right back.
Best of luck to you.

It sounds like your cat is not comfortable with the place that you have chosen for her kittens. It is likely that she is looking for a new place. Cats like to feel safe. They like dark cozy corners, closets, etc. Find your cat and her kittens a more comfortable spot and she'll be more likely to stay put for longer periods of time.

Lock momma in a small room or closet with the babies and a bed. Some momma cats don't know how to be a momma. But she will catch on if you take all distractions away.

Lock her in the room with them and let her out for an hour or two a few times a day. The baby kitties sleep most of the time anyway.
