After your child is born the hospital is required to file papers about the birth. These include demographic information to the Social Security Administration. You should receive their card and a copy of the birth certificate a few months later. If you do not have the card, check with your Social Security Administration office. You will need the childs birth certificate. If your looking to claim Social Security, you cannot do that until the child is of age.

The child must have a disability, a disabled parent or a deceased parent in order to collect SS.
