Is it supposed to be funny? Is it like "Make My Day" - an invitation for a fight? Where did this phrase come from? Who started it?

It does not make sense, and people use it only when they can't think of anything logical to say, like when they are very irritated about something.

bite me

I would have to believe that originally 'bite me' was a slightly more acceptable way of saying 'bl*w me.' Just like people use fricken istead of f**kin.

Although I think it has evolved to really just mean something like 'F**k Off!'
