Silverware
-Silverware should be placed on the table in the order it will be used; silverware that will be used first should be found on the farthest left and right sides of the plate.
-Forks are placed to the left of the dinner plate; knives and spoons go to the right.
-Knives should be placed with their cutting-edge toward the dinner plate, except the butter knife which should be laid flat on a bread plate.
-Utensils should be about 1/2-inch away from the plate or each other, and they should also be lined up evenly from their bottoms.
-Avoid placing more silverware than the meal calls for.
-Dessert silverware can be originally placed at the table setting if you wish. The dessert fork or spoon should be centered above and parallel to the dinner plate.
-If you will be serving dishes that require specialty silverware, be sure to arrange the silverware on either side of the plate according to the order in which they will be eaten.

I'm trying to remember when I learned this. At least on a regular day it's fork on the left and knife on the right, and if you have soup, the spoon goes to the right of the knife. I don't know what your silverware looks like, but the shorter fork is the salad fork, and that goes on the outside, with the dinner fork next to the plate. If you want to go even farther, you can lay a small fork and spoon above the plate for dessert. Hope that helps.

Starting at the left: Shrimp fork, Salad fork, Dinner fork. Plate in the middle ;) If you have a dessert fork it goes above the plate with the tines pointing to the right; if you have a dessert spoon it goes above the plate with the scooper-end to the left. On the right side of the plate, you have the knife, blade pointed toward the plate, then the teaspoon, then the soup spoon. The short fat one is the salad fork!
It's hard to explain, I can draw youa diagram if you want or have any other questions, shoot me an email!

To expand on Heidi answer. All silver ware is placed further from the place as it is used, example salid server first salid fork is the most outer piece, soup served next the soup spoon is placed just inside the salid fork.

It all depends on if its a luncheon or a dinner or a formal event, etc. It varies for every occasion and also with whatever food you are serving.
