Because after a while you become immune to it. Thats all I can think of because people who own cats definantly have a sticky house!

People with cats don't notice the odor because they are exposed to it all the time and they become immune to it. LOL, I know this because I am a cat owner who always thought my house didn't smell like "kitty" until I went away for 3 weeks. When I came home and walked into my house I was able to smell it just as everyone else who doesn't live there smells it! Now I elicit honest opinions from trusted friends on a regular basis.

First i can tell you i live in a house with a cat and my house does not stink. he goes potty outside. some times he will burry himself under something in a closit and gets locked in and has an accadent and then my house smells like rotten butt on a stick but that does not happen often.
I know my house does not stink because I hate going into homes were someone owns a cat and they dont clean the litter box everyday or someone who has a ton of cats, the house stinks and sometimes its enough to make someone sick.
when you are around something long enough you dont smell it. I have a friend who works at a slaughter plant. The smell does not bug him at all infact he does not notice any smell. You walk in there today and chances are you will gag if not barf.
I do wonder what my home smells like.

You are being totally nasty here about people and their animals. Did it ever occur to you that maybe most people don't find that the smell is offensive. The basic problem here is that you obviously don't like cats, but beyond that you must have a very sensitive nose. As you don't like cats, you haven't been around them much and so you are just more sensitive to the smell that the cats are giving out.
The cat owners love their cats and like probably most of their friends, they learn to live with the odor of cat. Truthfully, other than the smell of their litter, which I always keep clean in my house, I love the smell that the cat gives out. Better you should just stay away from people who have cats.

They become immune to the smell. But if the house actually stinks then the pet owner isn't keeping the litter box or their pets clean. I'm a cat owner. I scoop the cat box daily, i use odor absorbing litter and it is changed out once a week (pan washed and refilled). My cats get a bath once every two weeks. and I make sure my house is sanatized every other day. (lysol and antibacterial febreeze do wonders)
Pretty much the pet owner isn't as "clean" as they think they are, and I'm sorry if that offends anyone.

they probably do after being outdoors for any length of time and then coming back into their home. but it still might not be something that bothers them.
its the same with farms and farmers. they dont smell the smell as much as those who arent used to the smell.
its the same with regular hous-a-tosis. every house has a particular smell to it. depending on who lives there.. what they cook, etc.
this non awareness is also prevelant in other areas.. some people cant smell their own B.O. nor are they aware of the odor that wafts out of the bathroom after they've just left a deposit. :)

They say it doesnt' smell because they're used to the stinky cat smell. I live with three cats and two dogs. I don't smell it, but I'm sure my friends do.
But it's really just a matter of if you're used to the smell or not!

I've been to a few people's homes who've owned cats, and I can say that some seriously stunk, while others were fine. In fact I was surprised to find out that they had cats. I guess it's just a matter of hygiene and cleanliness.
Oh and for the record I don't like cats and I'm allergic to them. So I'm being unbiased.

If you're around any smell long enough you get used to it. Most likely the people with stinky houses need to clean the litter box more often.

just like when you wear perfume you become accustomed to the odor and do not smell it anymore - people who live with dogs sometimes have this problem also its not just a cat thing... wet dog :( I know plenty of people who keep their house odor free also - its part of being a responsible pet owner
