Theer is only one mountain range of any significance in Australia, the Great Dividing Range. The highest parts of the range lie either side of the NSW/Victorian border and all the mainland ski resorts are there. In NSW main resorts are Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, the PerisherValley/Smiggin Holes complex, Blue Cow and Guthega. Victoria has Mt Buller, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek. It is possible to have a day's skiing from Melbourne or Canberra but Sydney is too far away for travel there and back in a day and ski.

There are also ski resorts opening in Tasmania although I haven't skied there so don't know how good they are.

Australian snow is restricted by the season and the height of the mountains. The cross-country skiing is first rate but for downhill skiers there are no very long runs. It would be just about impossible to stage a world cup Downhill or Giant Slalom in Australia.

If you are planning a week or two in the snow, you should consider going to New Zealand. It has higher mountains and better snow. Compare prices.

There are many places you can Ski and Snowboard in Australia. Most of which are located in New South Wales and Victoria.

NSW and Victoria have many first rate ski resorts, such as Thredbo (NSW), Perisher (NSW), Mt Buller (VIC), to name a few. New South Wales ski resorts are all located in the Southern Ranges, near the provincial town of Cooma (About 500km from Sydney).

Of course, in Australia the Snow season is very short (About 3 or 4 months (July - September)).
