BOTH!
Western Catholics (such as Roman) make the sign of the cross one way. Holy (left) Spirit (right)
Eastern Catholics (such as Byzantine) the other. Holy (right) Spirit (left)

Left.
I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"
Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."
I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"
I say,
"Amen."
The Sign of the Cross is
- A statement of belief in the Holy Trinity
- A statement of belief in and thanksgiving for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
- God blessing us
- Us Blessing God ("I will bless the Lord at all times")
- A prayer using your entire body
- A Bible quote (Matthew 28:19)
With love in Christ.

historically the sign of the cross was separate from 'the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'. It was added to 'the Son' to indicate his salvific death. Eventually people came up with explanations linking each word to a part of the body, but that's not essential.

It should go left to right - I always said holy on the left and then spirit when crossing over to the right.
Tribble - you are a sad guy. And apparently you also know the mind of God.

Beware: Signing of the cross do by the catholics
Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the bond, that there be given them a mark on their right hand, or upon their forehead;
It was a mark given by the evil one.
Revelation 13:1 And he stood upon the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns, and seven heads, and on his horns ten diadems, and upon his heads names of blasphemy.
Note: Why is it even left-handed persons makes his cross sign using his right hand.
Revelation 13:16 .......
that there be given them a mark on their right hand, or upon their forehead;
Just asking.

holy =left spirit=right lifelong guilt....accompanies years of repeatedly making the sign of the cross! It's what makes us Catholics run...fear and guilt! ..not to mention the priest who's moral judgement may be clouded by sipping on too much of the "water-turned-to-wine" in the church..and forgetting his "vow of chastity!

I asked a priest once and he said it really didn't matter, you are still crossing yourself. Catholics usually go left to right and Orthodox Christians go right to left.

"In the name of the Father" (right hand touches forhead)
"and of the Son" (right hand touches heart)
"and of the Holy" (right hand touches left shoulder)
"Spirit" (right hand touches right shoulder)
"Amen." (I usually clasp hands)
