You might start by visiting actual "places" during your meditation. Sometimes a guided meditation can help.

Record a guided meditation which will take you to actual places. While there, write down what you see in detail. Get to the point where you can see details.

Once there, you can start moving around ... go through doors, around corners and such.

At some point, when you are good at the visualization, you might wish to watch your own body. Keep working in this fashion.

You also need to be sure that you have some way to get back TO your body. A sort of safety net.

Good luck,

You should explore Tai Chi QiGong and the meditative practice that comes with them. It probably is something you can't do on your own at first just from reading a book.

A qualified instructor will teach you the key to successful meditation. Not all people teaching meditation really know how to relax. They know how to relax laying down or sitting down, but have no idea how to relax standing or moving. Under the initial guidance of someone who has already done the astral projection, you should become proficient on your own.

You have to learn how to build chi in your body, then control the distribution and movement of chi. QiGong and then practicing the I-Chuan will teach you this. By going within yourself, you can then project outside yourself.

It could be you don't have enough energy to make the jump. projecting and staying in the astral takes quite a bit of energy. I would draw and hold as much as you can before making another jump

I'm just glad this question didn't show up in the martial arts section along with the jackholes that think "chi balls" is real.

EDIT: qu gong has been shown to be a fraud. Tai chi instructors that say "you will increase your chi" and refer to it as "magical energy" are also full of it.

The most famous examples of these jerk offs bieng exposed are the yellow bamboo and george dillman.

Except with "compliant partners" that throw themselves much in the way aikido ukes do, or camera tricks, there is no recorded episode of chi bieng used to "project" anything (unless you count the gas released from one's a ss after chili).
There is actually an offer, out there of a million dollars to anyone who can prove chi works. (later modified to anyone in the media due to the large volume of whakos wasting time) No one has collected- I think it has been open for 10 years too.

legitimate use of the term falls within testable or quantifiable and logical explanations such as: adrenalin, stregth, power, proper technique or structure.

The problem with "chi" is that it is undefined and people use the term for a great many things.

qi gong says you can "get, or take chi" from someone and add it to your own, or move spoons or forks with it- bogus. At least bible thumpers and miracle supporters have the excuse that "god doesn't do miracles anymore". or some other crap.

These guys say they can do it now, but can't demonstrate it- or they do only on thier students, and it NEVER works on a skeptic (I point you to the dillman situation on national geographic "is it real?" episode about martial arts).

EDIT: Just for kicks, here the choice videos exposing both yellow bamboo and george dillman as frauds.

Dillman: [infamous for his "no touch" ko claims with his "chi"]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-x4iJM2aU4

Yellow Bamboo: [claim they can project a force field with thier "chi"]

I don't know who is worse:

Radical evangelical bible thumpers who believe in this crap or martial arts frauds who sucker people in who have been softened up by wirework in movies and anime.

I would suggest finding a group in your area that incorporates this into their studies. Discussing it with others will help.
Learning some good meditation techniques will help

i think it comes easier to some people than others, just like any other talent like art or singing or sports. keep trying. i also find if you have someone who you connect with, try meeting them somewhere through astral projection, as sometimes its easier when you have other energy trying to find you : )
