It's actually not uncommon for women to crave and eat "nonfood" items when they're pregnant.

Pica is a medical condition defined as the persistent eating of nonfood items for a period of at least one month. Most children experience Pica at some time or another. It's also common among pregnant and post-partum women and among people with certain illnesses (for example, epilepsy and autism). It's the single most common eating disorder among those with mental retardation. Clay and laundry starch are pretty typical things to eat/crave among persons with Pica.

When I was in boarding school, food was a luxury. There was never enough and we were always hungry. I remember one girl, during breakfast when we'd get hard boiled eggs, would make a sandwich of it using the whole egg, yes, shell included!
At night, after lights out, we'd go to the bathroom and eat toothpaste and talcum powder we were that hungry. We also used to sneek into the nun's private orchard, hide among the tall leaves, yank out rhubarb stalks and munch it raw, soil and aphids included....one girl became very ill because she even ate the leaves which are poisonous.

No surprise, the boarding school (private too!!!!) was eventually closed down!
