I don't have a whole lot of money but am looking ofr a nice place to live. I'd say I'm a little average when it comes to the amount of money i have to spend. Which is a better place to live, LA or New York? Or if you have any other cities that you think are great that would be a good place for me to live, i would appreciate if you would mention them. Thanks!!

NY wins hands down - much lower crime rate, less polluted, a transport system that works, more appealing cityscape.

New York is unquestionably safer (in spite of a bad reputation, it's one of the safest cities in the world), but I think Los Angeles is the nicer city. Los Angeles has more green space spread throughout the city, and it has a much broader choice of types of housing (you'd be hard-pressed to find a single family home in NYC). L.A.'s transit system is much cheaper and also easier to use than New York's, and it has become increasingly comprehensive in the past few years.

Personally, I'd take Chicago over either L.A. or NYC. Unlike those two, Chicago makes use of its waterfront. The combination of lakefront parkland and gorgeous skyscrapers make it one of the most beautiful cities anywhere. Chicago is also easy to get around, and it's somewhat more affordable than either of the big coastal cities.

I live in Southern California and know LA and travel to NYC three times a year. NYC wins hands down as far as being nice and safe, never had a problem in NYC with anything, can't say the same for LA.
However, you mentioned $, and NYC is far from cheap. Much easier to live in San Diego, better than LA in most ways and far cheaper than NYC. It's much easier to get by with little money in San Diego.

Uh , one thing each of those places require is a substantial amount of $$$$$$ , unless you do not mind rooming with about 6 other strangers in a 2 bedroom apt.
If your income is less than $75K , I would seek elsewhere , unless you have the $.5M for an LA condo. If your have the $ .75M , go for NYC in the spring and summer .
LA is car country , NYC is public transit .
I like NYC (lived LA in the 70s and it was smoggy then)

Are you kidding me, NYC has been ranked America's safest city for at least a decade. Despite that go to LA. NYC is full of wusses and is overcrowded, cold, and full of gays. Both are expensive though, I went to Tampa to visit some of my family and housing is really cheap over their. Literaly you can get a 4 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood cheaper than you can get a 2 bedroom house in ghetto in NYC or LA. If you go to NYC or LA expect to get an apartment, because houses cost at least 1 million to live in a decent neighborhood.

I live in LA and it's not scary, trust me, I'm a little petite girl and I walk around feeling safe. The only area that I stay out of is Compton.
