Recent declines in the rate of marriage among Black women have been accompanied by substantial increases in rates of interracial marriage, especially between Black men and non-Black women. Explanations for the retreat from marriage among Black women have focused on deficits in the quantity and quality of available partners, and the role of racial intermarriage largely has been ignored. This study examines the impact of interracial marriage by Black men on the marriage prospects of Black women. First, our analysis of data from the 1990 Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) reveals that intermarried Black men are selective of those with the highest levels of education, income, and occupational prestige. Second, multilevel analysis, using both the IPUMS and Panel Study of Income Dynamics, show that the level of intermarriage in metropolitan areas is significantly related to the marital behaviors of Black women.

Local rates of intermarriage among Black men reduce the likelihood that Black women currently will be married and that they will make the transition to marriage. These effects are especially acute for highly educated Black women whose marriage markets are defined by those Black men who are most likely to intermarry. Finally, our analysis indicate that intermarriage affects the marital prospects of Black women by negatively affecting the pool of economically attractive marriage partners in the metropolitan area.

We don't have any more challenges in finding a man than any other woman. We are all people and must live our lives believing in ourselves. WE have an obligation to ourselves, families and communities to live a good life. When the right man comes into a woman's life, no matter what race, she will know.
The question should be. Is the man ready to make a life long commitment to a woman and a woman to a man. Society needs to get back to family values and stop the ethnic sickness which gets too much promotion.
Women of every race have a challenge finding quality men these days.

I would say that's possibly true, if they're only looking for a young black man. Because, most young black men typically are not that marriage-minded. I have 2 sons (young black men) in their 20s and one who is 31. The ones in their 20s are not the least bit interested in marriage, they don't want to be tied down, but the 31-year-old just got married. Tell your friends to hang in there... even though some of them aren't the marrying kind... there are some out there who are, just takes a while to find them.

Yes. That is true...the marriage among Black race has declined while the inter rational marriage rate has gone up. Personally, I think Black men will not think twice about dating a non Black woman but black women will have a big issue with a non black man dating her...not alone marrying her...

I think if Black women allow the chance to open up and broaden the horizon the balance might return....

I think SBW today especially have a hard time finding a partner for marriage today. We have too many standards for some men to meet some would say. On the other hand it's simply hard trying to find the one who is right for you and your family. Alot of men are unfaithful as too some women so alot of people are relunctant on that note.

I think the majority of black men have more of a sex drive then white, so black women might have a harder time finding one w/out cheating issues. I might just think that because black men hit on me more then white, but thats my thoughts on it. Black women could be pickier? Or smarter! In all races though, you'll find all kinds of different people.

black women are tough and gorgeous and are usually known to play hard to get...it may be hard to find a guy (usually they prefer black men) because black men kinda have a reputation of being players....so they'll wait for the right guy 'cuz they're smart!
