I would highly recommend you get in touch with a local behaviourist. Ask you vet for the best in your area. Dog borstal don't always do what is best for the dog.

When a problem involves aggression, training canm just suppress the problem rather than fixing it. If a problems is just suppressed it can return at all time, and WILL be 50 times worse when it does.

An animal behaviourist will address the reasons behind the problem and address it from a completely different way. Teaching the dog to relax and teaching it how to handle the situations without aggression.

Given that he likely was using in fights, it's probably better if you seek professional help in the training of your dog. This isn't a simple thing to work with. Did you get him from rescue or the spca, or just some person? Do they have confidence that this can be fixed? How old is your dog?

It's possible to train him not to fight dogs and act aggressive around other dogs.Honestly even if you did, I would never trust him. If another dog approached and acted aggressively, he might just start up again. I would keep him muzzled in public just to make sure, you, others, and other dogs are safe.

I think he probably could be re-trained with specialists, this would be pretty pricey but worth it.

Can I also say to linda.clark.4: staffies are beautiful creatures which a highly misunderstood as they were used for dog fighting. The do NOT look 'nasty'. They are trained to be like that! It is possible for a chihuahua to fight the same and you wouldn't go round describing them as 'horrible' and 'nasty'. So think about what you are saying

Poor baby - we had a jack russell the same - he was a potential animal killer so we had to retrain him .- listen - put yourself in his eyes for a moment - you see another dog - what goes through your mind ?? : FEAR - ANGER -FIGHT OR BE ATTACKED. STAND YOUR GROUND AS A WEAK DOG WILL BE DOMINATED / KILLED.

SO you need to change this LEARNT BEHAVIOUR. Someone in his past did a good job on him :o(

Start this way - de-sensitise him simply by using his favourite treat in the word - lets say stinky salami....cut up loads and pop in a bag in your pocket - take him for a walk - stand a good distance from other animals at the park and the MOMENT he stops barking at them - slip him a treat as a reward for positive behavious. Get closer - when he goes mad - ignore it - totally IGNORE this bad behavious. When he stops fussing reward him - praise and treat.... Praise and treat. When you let people walk past you and they have a dog on a lead - he may go nuts - just ignore that - when he stops fussing - reward - praise. Eventually he will click as he is a very clever dog - then he will think ANOTHER DOG = SOMETHING NICE HAPPENING TO ME. This will reprogram him .... goodluck - i love staffies :o)

You need to consult a dog behavourist. Not a trainer, a behaviourist, to find the cause of his aggression. When you know the cause, you can work on retraining him.

after seeing the programme dog borstal on BBC 3, I believe any dog can be re-trained. If you don't feel you can manage it yourself, then go for a dog trainer

he will need to be trained althought depending on how old the dog is it might be to late to teach it.. but staffys are horrible dogs who look nasty.. so it might just be there nature which cant be changed .

sounds like your dog has had a bad time, if your dog is still young under two and a half you should be able to train him but, any older i shouldn't think so he has been doing this all his life it will be hard for you to now to tell him he shouldn't do it.good luck.

That's a tough call. If he was raised as a fighter, it's usually had to get it out of them. The only thing I would recommend is INTENSE obedience training.
