Boxer Dogs, Are they any good around kids?

Question

I would love to get a boxer dog, but I'm also planning on having a baby with my wife. Her concern is that the dog will get jealous and my harm the baby. Can anybody reassure my wife please?!

I honestly haven't met a boxer who was not good with kids! They LOVE kids, alot. The only thing is it may be a little hyper, so you would have to teach it to calm down around the new baby.

Do you have any friends who have kids? If you decide to actually get one you could have them come around alot, or bring the dog to them so the dog is used to having kids around. Obedience training would be a plus too! Some kids may be afraid of a big dog/puppy unless they sit down nice. (I recommend Petsmart! Its about 100$ for an 8 week training session. I have done it the my past 2 dogs, and plan on going there with my Dachshund when she gets to the age requirement. ) <-- they also have a puppy play class; for puppies 8 weeks - 12 weeks maybe. It helps with socializing.

But anyway! Boxers are wonderful with kids; but as with any dog you should always do proper training and socializing (esp. with kids). They also tend to be hyper so when your child gets older (when your wife and you decide to have one) a boxer would make a wonderful playmate!

My best friend has a 3 year old boxer and a 1 year old baby. The dog is very friendly and would never intentionally harm the baby. However boxers are VERY hyper dogs by nature and there has been times where he has run into the bouncy seat or swing or jumped on my friend while she was holding the baby. The baby has not been injured but could have been.
As long as you watch the dog around the baby, you'd be fine

Boxers are a great family dog. They are playful and loyal. They are very good around kids but because of their size, they may accidently knock over a little one.
They do need lots of exercise so make sure you have time to play with and walk the dog. If you don't exercise boxers enough, they may get destructive around the house but that is not the dogs fault, it is the owners.

Young Boxers (up to about two years old) can be "bulls in a china shop." When they romp and jump, they do so with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people.
If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Boxer puppies. The temptation to play roughly is simply too strong in many young Boxers. Obedience training is started early since they also have a strong personality and therefore can be harder to train when older. This, in addition to their strength, might present a challenge for a first-time dog owner. Boxers have earned a slight reputation of being "headstrong", which can be related to inappropriate obedience training. Boxers have a very long puppy hood and adolescence, and are often called the "Peter Pan" of the dog world. They are not considered fully mature until two to three years of age, one of the longest times in dogdom, and thus need early training to keep their high energy from wearing out their owner. I have a friend who has had his boxer since before he had kids. He loves the children as much as a person would. The kids do whatever they want to the dog and he does not care. My friend has four children ages 4 to 1. I have never seen the dog act agressive towards anyone it knew. It's basically a big puppy.

From my experience with friends who owned boxers, they are so sweet!
Jealousy is the last thing I could imagine with the breed.
In fact, my friend told me that her in laws owned a pair of female boxers (sisters) and when her stepson was a baby, the dogs used to cuddle around him on the couch and guarded him from all non-parent individuals!
(one of the dogs, Stumpy, used to cuddle and protect the mother's pregnant belly before the child was born)
They're playful & VERY SMART with a strong "mother" instinct!

I have a 12 month old boxer and he brings so much joy to my life. He is awesome around kids and very protective of my little niece. They are not aggressive dogs, but they are very hyper and need to be trained from a young age.

Yes.. For example my 5 year old boxer never been around kids before watched a 2 year old i use to baby sit. He actually protected him when somebody came.. they are great with little ones..Another example my sister brought her baby over and my dog just watched him and made sure he was OK.. you wont regret it..

you have to be selective when choosing your dog. Choose the boxer that gets along with the other dogs. You'll find that they will treat the baby as a brother or sister.

If you get a puppy and raise him with love and attention he will love your baby most likely more that you will, just don,t push him aside let him know that the baby is his to.
I had a dog when I had my first baby and everyone said she would be jealous, but she would sleep under his crib and guard him all the time,so don't be afraid of a dog.
