Hello, I am currently working on a play. I am starting with the end of a funeral service, just before the coffin is carried away from church. After someone has talked, I want the priest or minister to say something. I just wonder what they could say that would make this funeral service believable. Would it be "ashes to ashes and dust to dust" or something along the line, or could a minister basically say whatever they want?

As the body is taken from the church, a hymn, or one or more of these anthems may be sung or said:
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life to those in the tomb.
The Sun of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death.
The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world.
Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in his Name, saying, Come, O blessed of the Creator; inherit the kingdom prepared for you.

Ashes to ashes... is mostly for at the gravesite, when they're lowering the casket. I'd suggest something along the lines of "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord" Or "Go in peace" Or you can end it w/a simple prayer, perhaps the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6) or The Lord is my Shepard (Psalm 23) Good luck!

What denomination is this clergyman? Run off to the library, or a local church of that denomination, and look in their service book. Best way to achieve authenticity, if that's what you're after.
