Cats are curious. For some reason all cats I have had love to check out bags. They love to crawl in and then crawl out. sometimes they stay inside for awhile. As far as boxes, one of my cats loves to sit in a box and the smaller the better, as she gets bigger. Why do they do it, who knows, they are cats. They are curious by nature. I have had cats get stuck in the handles and have had to free them, but they don't learn. Best to keep the bags folded up so she can't get stuck, but in reality they love going into boxes and bags. It's their form of a toy. Maybe use shopping bags without handles.

Domestic cats are descended from predators. Predators hunt their food by hiding and sneaking around to increase their odds by surprising their prey. Domestic cats have hunted small rodents for years, and it's an ingrained ability – instinct – to stalk, hunt, pounce, chase, & enter small places just to see if some little animal is waiting trapped inside to be a nice snack for them. It's not just curiosity; the curiosity comes from the hunting instinct.

Cats are sneaky and like to hide out. Bags and boxes are perfect hiding places for cats.

Cats like to think that no one else can see them and if they cannot see you that they think that you cannot see them.

As far as the freaking out, small, unexpected noises can scare cats, hence the term "scaredy cat."

Because cats, by nature, are curious. That really pretty much sums it up! And it doesn't matter that they get older. They'll be just as curious as they were when they were kittens, for the most part.

cats were made with an intense curiosity factor that gets them in so much trouble.....and they are so much fun to watch and save from their own mischief...........and kitties love caves. bags are portable caves. but they aere noisey and cats do not like noise--so they freak. then we save them.
enjoy your kitty--
