I have been prescribed by my doctor to take x2 tabs of 50mg of fluconazole once a week for 7 weeks. This is to treat vaginal thrush. I read the leaflet and it says im supposed to have just one single dose of 150mg to treat thrush? Why would my doc put me on it for 7 weeks and only to take it once a week? is this a mistake? and wont my partner get it back again because its going to take so long to treat? help?

You're right. I found the same info on the official Flucanazole web site: http://www.fluconazole.com/fluconazole_dosage/

You should definitely call your doctor to find out the reason for the discrepancy. Perhaps the pharmacy misread the prescription.

There are many reasons for a physician to change the dosing of a medication from the "norm". Your particular health histroy is of vital importance in determining the right dose, drug, and timing.

The first question is: Is this your first case of thrush, or have you failed previous treatment?

The second question: do you have problems with your kidneys?

The third question: Is you immune system normal?

While my source does not indicate this exact regiment, this does not mean it is incorrect. The dosing prescribed is well within the longer treatment protocols.

If you have doubts about this medication, please contact your physician and discuss it with him or her.

I encourage all patients to discuss new medications with whomever prescribed them. This is an excellent way to avoid errors.
