your screwed unless you buy it or call ms, but they require proof its yours. and it may not work on a 98 machine anyway, too old.

You do not have to use illegal software.

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

My friend what you are asking is for someone to break the copyright law for you because you do not want to pay, tisk, tisk.

Try buying a copy. My sister found out it did not pay to get what she thought was a freebe. Do a search on WindowsXP and you will find you can get a true copy of WindowsXP complete with COA (Certificate Of Authenicity) for $128.00USD, including shipping.

By your own words..."I am trying to install it on my computer but a friend gave me a copy and i don't have the number."
LOL...Trying to get help with Pirating a Window OS really isn't a good idea here...I'll be surprised if you don't get reported.
