My male cat twitches when he is fast asleep,
he feel asleep accross my chest and stomach the other day and i could feel him twitching, it was really strange.
are cats supposed to do this?
is he having a bad dream?
do cats dream?
do you think he was abused in the past?

Animals do dream. I've had a few animals in the past, and the majority of the time when i saw them sleeping, they were twitching. I believe that they are dreaming about running or chasing something and that is why their legs twitch.

It's natural for a cat to twitch in his sleep. Yes, he is dreaming, and a lot of the twitching is like the cat running for something in the dream. I see this with my cats all the time.
I don't think this has to do with abuse in the past. If your cat was abused you would know it. The cat would not be asleep on your chest. Just by doing that the cat is showing you how comfortable he is with you, and how much he cares about you.

Okaaay...It is completely normal for animals of any sort to twitch in their sleep. They're just dreaming.
Cats as well as most mammals probably dream. If they can think, if they have a brain, they probably dream. I don't know what about, but they do.
And you'll never know if your cat was abused in the past, unless you meet his previous owners and undergo a strenuous investigation with them. Because chances are, they won't outright tell you that they hurt your cat. So don't try that...

Cats twitch when they dream. They DO have a built in inhibitor to keep them from making large movements when they are fast asleep. Since they are small predators and relatively vulnerable, they've evolved that way.
Dogs don't have as effective an inhibitor and they move a lot more when they are asleep. Since dogs are pack animals and not solitary hunters like cats, the inhibitor wasn't as important.
Since humans are rarely alone and in danger, we have virtually no inhibitor. There are isolated groups around the world that do have them, but not Americans. We talk and walk in our sleep, esp. when we are young.

No, i dont think so, our family has four cats and all of them do the twitching when they are fast asleep. i think that they are having dreams or something because sometimes they purr or sometimes they hiss. either way i dont think its because of abuse in the past , well in my situation its not becasue we got our cats at an early age, when they were still kittens. dont worry so much, and if you are, ask a vet

he is fine. just having a dream. maybe dreaming of chasing mice or like ours had a nightmare of pink flying mice.(long story attached to that)
